How to receive Message Alert Sound for new incoming msgs?

hi, does anyone know of a way to hear the 'new inbox msg'
alert sound without having to have outlook express open
all the time?

Now, how do you think ANY mail client can notify you that a message has
arived if it's not running to check if a message has arrived? That's like
asking you how you can drive your car with the engine off.
 
Easy - some is towing it. There are programs that run in the system tray
that check your email server periodically. Maybe someone will be kind enough
to post them here or do a search on cnet or tucows. I don't use them.
Incredimail is an alternative full email client - when you close the main
program the system tray icon remains.

But you then still have a mail client running. Whether it is Outlook or
some other client, I just don't see the difference.
 
I don't think most of these can be classed as a client since they can't be
used to send and receive. However it would be an extra program running
taking up valuable resources.
