I need to reboot my PC but it came with XP already loaded so I don't have an
installation disk. Can anyone advise please?

Hi Jim,

I cannot install any new hardware - keep getting the message that the I/O
operation was aborted because of either a thread exit or an application
request. Couldn't find any answers to resolve this so thought the best
option was to reboot the system and start from scratch.

You mean you need to *reinstall* Windows? Why? How do you know? The need to
do that is rare. If you have problems, post them here; it's likely that
someone can help you and a reinstallation won't be required.

but it came with XP already loaded so I don't

OEM vendors are required by their agreement with Microsoft to give you a
means of reinstalling, should it be necessary. They can do this in one of
three ways:

1. An OEM copy of Windows
2. A restore CD
3. A hidden partition on your drive, with restore information.

If you don't have 1 or 2, you should have 3, but you should contact your
vendor to find out.

Personally, I find both 2 and 3 unacceptable (especially 3; a hard drive
crash can leave you with nothing), and would never choose to buy a computer
that came with an operating system unless I got a complete generic
installation CD for that operating system.

Hi Ken

Sorry, yes I meant reinstall. Please see my second post for the reason why.
But maybe this is the wrong option??

You don't need an installation CD to reboot a computer. Simply click
Start > Turn off Computer > Restart.

Though I have received considerable flack for saying so, I
believe a lack of install disk can best be resolved by
borrowing a computer, going online to Ebay, and looking for
a new copy of XP. There are hundreds on any given day,
likely even thousands.

Look for one whose option says 'Buy it Now" in red.

I purchased a VALID copy of XP Pro for under $60 last year.,

And Microsoft and Ebay are REALLY cracking down on the
pirates these days, so you should be able to get a good copy
for less than $100. There are certainly schools and
businesses that wish to unload "extra copies" and recoup
some of their costs.

When I bought mine, the seller indicated he had "3 copies"
available.

That says he is a corporate seller who is trying to recoup
some $$$ from his company over-purchasing (also known as
downsizing).

Good luck!

Well, yes, of course you have. You continue to deliberately offer bad
advice.

Yes, and some of them might even be legitimate sales. Unfortunately,
it's often impossible for a prospective buyer to tell the legitimate
from the illegitimate sales until long after the money is already spent.

No, you didn't, as attested to by your final paragraph. (and as you've
been told before.) What you describe was most definitely *NOT* a
legitimate sale.

pirates these days, so you should be able to get a good copy

Microsoft tries, but eBay doesn't, not really. eBay makes no prior
effort to ensure that such sales are legitimate; they react only when
someone files a complaint. (And then all that really happens is the
seller of the pirated software returns using a different alias, to
continue selling illegitimate licenses.)

Proving that you bought "stolen" goods. No one by a licensed reseller
can sale Volume Licenses, and they cannot be resold.

And even if the firm did have to sell of some of its computers, it
couldn't have legitimately sold off portions of its Volume License.
