how to put a acute on a letter eg e

I live in ireland and we have "fadas" above certain vowels e.g. "e". How do
I set keyboard to do this in ms word, in my office I press alt gr & e and get
it. I have also noticed that the @ sign is above the 2 and not ' as on the
keyboard.
I use windows xp pro.
 
The second part is easy. You're using the US layout of your keyboard. You
need UK.

Did you check the Character Map to see if the letters you need are available
in the font you want to use?
 
For the first part ...

Tools > Customize > Keyboard
Scroll down categories on the left and select Common Symbols
Scroll down the common symbols on the right
Select the one you want and enter the key combination of choice.
