How to protect directories on my computer

I'm using Win XP Pro, and I wonder if there is a way to protect certain
directories on my computer. I appreciate any help........Of course I would
buy a program that you recommend.......Peter

XP uses permissions. In Start | Help and support type permissions in
the search box.

"Protect" the directories from what, precisely? Other users?
Accidental erasure/deletion?

Of course, if you have WinXP Pro, you can encrypt the desired
files/folders.
