Hello,

I have two hard drives and my question is what I can do to stop malware from
writing to the 2nd (non primary O/S) drive ?

I already though of disconnecting the 'sensitive' 2nd drive, but perhaps
there is a better way as it is a dual boot system and I would prefer not to
have anything* passing between the two.

With thanks,

Actually, computer security starts right at the point-of-entry for any
malware. Viruses and trojans are typically downloaded by the user or
uploaded by an abuser into the computer. This means screening off the
system from the rest of the world. From a practical standpoint, this
means running effective anti-virus, anti-malware and anti-spyware apps,
usually behind a firewall. Most important, the definitions for countering
viruses, malware and spyware should always be current and, sometimes,
having and running a secondary scanning system helps. Firewall should
only allow incoming connections from trusted sources but never allow
any outgoing connections without authorization by the user. This is about
the best anyone can do.

And for a dual-boot system, both OS's need to be equally protected. That
is, the protection apps must also be running at the time any of the OS is
running. Once malware is in the computer, it doesn't matter whether which
OS is infected; it is guaranteed that both will become so.

Don't let malware get installed on the computer in the first place.

Hi,

I think what I am really asking is how to prevent or STOP any write
operations to one drive from the XP o/s of the other drive.

Isn't there a way to tell XP NEVER to write to a particular drive ?

However thanks for your input...much appreciated.

Yes Rock...I know that!

but I want to be safe in case another user is reckless on the 'other' drive
running unsafe apps.

Besides making sure you have in place needed security measures such as
firewall, AV, and anti-malware, regularly image the drive to an external
hard drive (and disconnect it when not imaging). Acronis True Image Home
version 10 is a good product for this.

Only allow other users to have a limited user account. This will help to
limit but does not remove all potential risk.

ROCK,

I have had a look at the faq on TrueCrypt. From what I see you CAN'T
truecrypt
a 2nd volume and also be able to BOOT from it .

Am I right in this ???

Remove the drive letter from the partition.
