I am running XP Pro at home with several family member
users. One user is not required to enter a password. Is
there a way to require a password but have the system
prompt them to enter it at their next logon?

Go to Control Panel/User Accounts and select the "Change
the way users log on and off" link.

Select BOTH check boxes.

Click "Apply Options" button.

On the "User Accounts" window, click on "Change an
account" link.

Select the account to which you wish to add the password.

Click on "Create a password" link.

Fill out the boxes and click the "Create Password" button.

Close the User Accounts window.

Close Control Panel.

Select Log Off from Start Menu.

Select Switch User.

A list of all accounts (with personalized icons) will now
be visible. Any account that is password protected will
require the entry of that password before the user account
will open.

I was wondering if I could prompt the user to enter their
own password without giving them one beforehand.

if you are running xp pro you can type "control userpasswords2" in the run box, go to the "Advanced" Tab.
Look for "Advanced user management" and click advanced there. Click Users right click and go to properties on the user you want to require to have a password Check "user must change password at next logon" clcik ok and close the window and your done
