I have user who need print out check with signature on
it, and this file is on diskette, so the batch file is on
N: drive that point to load a:\*******.RAS file, also
another bitmap files with real picture signature
associated with ********.bmp file on diskett as well, she
used to have old windows 98 machine she can print out
check with signature on it, but when she switch to
windows XP, she try to print the check again, but the
signature is gone, only have little happy face on the
check, no signature. the printer is xerox docuprint N40,
I even download the printer driver from xerox web site,
still not working, try to load the publisher on windows
XP like windows 98 has already installed, I know they use
real high graphic program, but still not working, need
help.

thank you so much

Whoa. I think you win tonight's prize for "Most Confused Post". If I
understand you correctly - and that's quite possibly not the case -
then you created a file in some program that will print out checks with
a signature. Have you installed this program on your WinXP machine?
What is the name of the program? It sounds like you have not got the
program installed on the WinXP box but are just trying to work with the
file which you have saved on a floppy. Post back with exactly what you
are trying to do, the name of all software involved, and do try to post
clearly and concisely, using paragraphs.

*.ras is Sun Raster Format. I don't know if this will help you, but the free
image viewing utility, Irfanview lists .ras as one if the files it can display
and print. It's available for download at www.irfanview.com .

Dear Malke:

Fist I checked the windows 98 machine to see what is
loaded on this machine, they are only regulare office
2000 products and publisher loaded onto it, I know it's
kind of confuse, when you check the folder option, then
file type, on the extension showing RAS, then click
advanced, it show MIME as file type, but, if you are
windows XP machine, go to tools, then folder option, then
file type, then Extension, there are no RAS as file type,
if I add new, type "RAS" as file extension, then click
drop down menu on associated file type, they are
no "MIME" to be selected it, I know singature is kind of
graphic program, so I installed publisher on XP machine,
still not work, when I following the instruction as
following:
Go to Dos prompt:
on the network drive N:\glnload.bat, this file is trigger
to insert diskette a:\******.RAS, so the user following
the instruction hit enter, enter, then will print the
payroll check with manger's singature onto it, inside the
diskette A has another file is call ******.bmp, I can see
the manager's singature bitmap file, but as I said when
print out check only show a little happy face logo that
all, it's blank on the singature part, I know RAS is from
RAS/SUN, I even went to web site download from
www.irfanview.com, it a freeware and download image
viewer and converter is called iview380.exe file, still
not work.

I hope so far you have a clear picture I want to saying,
so the question I have is: Is the MIME trigger the
graphic singature to print, if it is, then how did you
add "MIME" to associated file type, I check the registry
did not get anything at all. one thing I found out that
windows 2000 server has "MIME" on the associated file
type, it come with it, but not on windows XP.

thanks for all your help.
looking forward your answer.

The .ras file doesn't open with Irfanview? I don't have one(a .ras file) to
play with so I can't check it out, sorry.

You installed some program on your 98 box that associated the .RAS
file type with whatever program it needed to run. MIME isn't a type
of program, but an encoding used on the internet (well, that's
simplified, but....). E-mails from some systems are often encoded in
MIME format.
if I add new, type "RAS" as file extension, then click
drop down menu on associated file type, they are
no "MIME" to be selected it, I know singature is kind of
graphic program, so I installed publisher on XP machine,

Of course, when you try to associated .RAS in XP, you can't find what
you are looking for. The program you originally had was never
installed, so the file association it created is no longer there!
MIME is not a program but an encoding scheme; if you haven't installed
a program that needs MIME it won't be in the list of file
associations.

..RAS is not a Publisher file type, so that won't help you either. Do
you think that just because you have Publisher, you can use it to open
ANY kind of graphic file? Get real!
still not work, when I following the instruction as
following:
Go to Dos prompt:
on the network drive N:\glnload.bat, this file is trigger

MIME is an ecoding format, not a program used to "open" any type of
file.

I'm still confused about lots of things here...your attempt to clear
things up still leaves the water really muddy. As far as I could
tell, you added equal amounts of water and dirt to the original
puddle.

Have you ever considered just leaving the 98 box alone and using it to
do this stuff? Some things just won't run in XP like they did 98!

OK, coming back to this thread: no, Lillian, you still are not
expressing yourself too clearly, but perhaps English is not your first
language, so that's OK. Basically, here's your situation:

1. You created a file using "Some Program" on your Win98 box which saved
the file using a *.ras extension.

2. You don't have that "Some Program" installed on the WinXP box so the
*.ras extension is not associated with the "Some Program" that would
properly read the file. Therefore, you can't open/read this file.

3. You must install the same "Some Program" (or an updated version
designed to run on WinXP) on the WinXP box to open and read the file
you have saved on the floppy. If you don't have the "Some Program" then
you need to get it from the manufacturer. If you don't know what the
"Some Program" was, then you need to create a new signature file with a
new bitmap using a completely different program, one that you have
installed on your WinXP machine.

End of story.
