When you post in here, always include your version, SP level, and mode (if
applicable) of Outlook - you can find this information in Help | About. Also
include the type of mail account(s) you use and any other pertinent details.
Be sure to put a consise summary of your question in the subject line, and
the full details in the body of your post.

To bypass the deleted items folder, press shift+del on the item(s) in
question.
To empty the deleted items folder, right-click/empty deleted items.
To empty the retained deleted items while using Exchange, you can use the X
button in that window.

Your Exchange admins can get anything back from backups, so don't assume
you're really covering your tracks as well as you may think you are.

Items moved to the Deleted Items folder really have NOT been deleted. They
are just in a folder that happens to have "delete" in its name. When you
delete items from the folder, or if you hit Shift+Del for selected item(s),
you permanently delete-mark them. I say they are delete-marked, not
deleted. That is because the status of that record in the database is
changed to "Deleted" which means the client will simply not show those
delete-marked items (i.e., they are hidden but still there). Delete-marked
items are not physically purged from the database until you execute the
Purge command or its equivalent. For Outlook, the purge equivalent is to
compact the message store. So compact your PST file and all those
delete-marked items will get physically purged from it.

Thanks for the info. I'm not covering my tracks as much as just needing to
be tidy and have the feeling that the extra garbage is really gone - kind of
anal, I know. However, you inform me that it's still not really gone anyway.
Thanks again.

Thanks for your help!

Hi

I used to be able to permanently delete items using Shift+Delete. Now that
feature is no longer working. Is there a way to reset that shortcut key
using Outlook 2003?
