how to open gz-zipped file ?

I just received a word file zipped in a gz format. I thought I would be
able to open it with 7-zip but it doesn't work. How can I open it ?

Sorry, I work under windows. I downloaded and installed gzip and read,
to my surprise , that 7-zip should be able to unzip a gz file. But it
does recognise it. Is this a case for a bothed file association ?

IZArc alleges that it can undo this sort of file.

Winzip does gzips. There may be other common programs that do, but I
havr gzip associated with Winzip, so I don't know.

I can confirm it, having most recently used the program to open a gzip
file a couple of weeks ago. IZArc handles gzip files cleanly and
quickly; almost as quickly as the native unix gzip software, in fact.

Was it FTPed without switching to binary mode first? If so, then
nothing will work.
