Some people son has bought them a new computer and they are getting it
next week supposedly. I think it's a Dell, not sure. Anyway, their old one
has Windows 98 and the new is XP, of course. They asked me to help them
set it up and move stuff from the old one to the new one.

Question:

What is the best way / program to move programs and data from an old
computer to a new one?

Hi,

In addition to the suggestions others have made, it's also pretty easy
to take the old drive out of the old computer and run it as a slave for
a few minutes in the new computer. Doing so will make things drag and
drop easy from one drive to the other.

In addition to what the others have posted; you cannot move "programs" from
one machine to another. The programs will have to be installed from the
original disks. The reason for this is that when a program installs on your
computer, it not only creates a folder for itself, but also puts files into
other folders (like System and System32), and also adds or modifies entries
in the Windows Registry. Simply copying the installed folder from the old
machine to the new machine will not work. If the programs were part of the
original installation on the old computer, it is very unlikely that you will
be able to install them on the new computer unless they are on separate
disks.
