How to manipulate sequential numbers

Here is my dilemma, I have a client who has created a large document and he
has indexed it. But there are index references with multiple entries and
many are on sequential pages. For example, "distribution list" is on pages
10, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 23, 26, 27,28 etc. What he wants are the page
references to read 10, 14-18, 23, 26-28........etc.

Can this be done at all? If so, How? He is using Office 2003. Thanks for
any assistance anyone can give me.

To get page ranges, you have to bookmark the text range and then insert an
index entry (XE field) pointing to the bookmark.

Suzanne, thanks for responding so quickly but I guess I am dense. I haven't
really used bookmarks that much. I understand what they are and how you do
it (figured that out using help), but I played with what I thought you were
saying and I just can't get it. Would you mind giving me more detail in what
I am suppose to do? How do you bookmark a text range when a word is spread
over 20 pages or so? And then the insert of the XE field has me baffled. As
I said in the beginning, guess I am being dense. I would really appreciate
your help. thank you again.

In the example you gave, where you want, say, "26-28," you select pages 26
to 28 (or better, from the first occurrence of the word on page 26 to the
last occurrence on page 28, so it will remain accurate if the pages reflow)
and use Insert | Bookmark to bookmark that range. Then, pretty much
anywhere, but presumably on one of those pages, you insert the XE field.
Press Alt+Shift+X to open the Mark Index Entry dialog, select the radio
button for "Page range," and select the appropriate bookmark from the
dropdown list.

FWIW, the "Mark entries for text that spans a range of pages" section of the
"Create an index" Help topic gives instructions for doing this.
