Good afternoon everyone.
We are opening a satellite office, but we do not plan to have any on-site
support any time soon. My question is. Does Microsoft have any tool, like a
help desk or PC Anywhere tool, that lets you manage Windows 2000 Professional
remotely? I've been investigating and I am struggling to find info badly.
Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Yes,
Use "terminal services". You can install it from "add remove programs" in
the control panel. Click add/remove windows components and it will be near
the bottom. It's a great tool.
If your office is using a firewall, you will need to configure a "network
address translation" to get through it.

There are no native tools under Win2000. You could
use pcAnywhere (as you said), or WinVNC.

Thanks Mith, bt I am a little confused.
I though that with Terminal Services you could only access a SERVER from a
CLIENT. I think I need to go from CLIENT to CLIENT for troubleshooting
purposes. Will Terminal services do that?

Thanks Pegassus. That's what I thought. Has anyone heard of Intellimirror? I
am researching on this since it might help with a list installation and
removal of apps, which is what we will be mostly doing.

Hello,

For Windows 2000 professional you will need some 3rd party software
(unlike Windows XP).

For commercial try Remote Administrator: http://www.radmin.com/
For freeware try Ult@vnc: http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net/

Kris.

how about using netmeeting remote desktop sharing?
it comes when you install netmeeting.
You can activate it from the list of services or through netmeeting.
Then you make a secure call using netmeeting and you have the clients
desktop on your screen, without the user having to do anything.

The OP wants to administer a Win2000 Professional workstation.
Terminal Server is available for servers only, not for Win2000
Workstations.

My fault, I thought you had 2000 server. Professional does not have it In
your case, I would use PC Anywhere or vnc 4.0. It's free. Realvnc.com

Desmond,

There is no need nor is it advisable to download the version that you cited a
link for since it's not compatible with Windows 2000.

If you go to this website you'll see the applicable warning messages. Windows
2000 already has its own version of NetMeeting installed by default.

Thank you very much guys. I am trying to find documentation on netmeeting
now. One question though, Does File and Print shraing have to be enable? I
wouldn't think so, though.

I use Remote Administrator, http://www.radmin.com/ A great little tool,
easy to install and use. Runs on multiple platforms, including Win2k.

By default, File & Print sharing is enabled.
Netmeeting documentation and the correct platform NM version should be
locatable on the same link.

HTH. Thanks.
