How to make Internet shorcuts point to Opera in place of IE?

Goal: Using Opera 9 as my default web browser

I tried selecting Opera 9 as my default browser, however, Internet
shortcuts still start IE. I tried the same with Firefox 1.5 with
similar results.

I was under the impression that selecting a new default browser would
automatically handle this. However, what I determined was that the
only way to do this was by manually editing the "file type" for
Internet Shortcuts.

My question is simple: Apart from manually editing the files types, is
there another more simple way of doing this?

Howdy, Traveler,

You can create shortcuts on the desktop to about anywhere you want,

Example

Right click the desktop, select New, select create shortcut,
type: http://www.snopes.com/
Or
type: http://www.google.com/
Or
Whatever you can think of.

Maybe I was not clear... my problem is that clicking on a Internet
Shortcut located on my desktop starts IE in place of Firefox!

I already set Firefox to be the default browser.

When I check the file associations, I see that Internet Shortcuts are
STILL associated to IE even though I told the system that Firefox was
the default. As a matter of fact, the Internet Shortcut Icons all
changed to Firefox.

I am trying to see if there is an easier way to switch browsers
without having to manually edit the file associations.

Are you trying to open the shortcuts from the menu on the
system?

When you first install opera then open it, the prompt should
pop up, and ask whether to use opera as default. Select
"don't ask again" (lower corner check box), then click
[yes]. Then inside Opera select properties from the tools
menu and 'walk through' all the selections and tabs,
answering all the questions as appropriate. Save these by
clicking OK when you're done. Then close and restart Opera.
Then close browser and restart system.
Some pages will only work inside IE. Thats the way the web
developer wrote the site.

I will try to be clearer...

a. Firefox is set as the default browser.

b. I have several Internet shortcuts on my desktop (name.url)

c. I double-click on one of these desktop Internet shortcuts.

d. The problem --> IE starts and not Firefox <--

e. I tried the same using Opera 9 with similar results.

In other words, although Firefox is set as the default browser and the
desktop Internet Shortcut icons (automatically) changed to Mozilla
Firefox' version, clicking on them starts IE and not Firefox.

In Windows Explorer|Tools|Folder Options|File Types, "Internet
Shortcuts" are still associated to IE!
