What software do I need to get a bunch of digital photos onto a CD so that I
can put the CD in a DVD player and click through the photos. I am not
interested in fancy effects. Just clicking through the photos would do for
starters.

You don't need anything. All you need is a DVD player that can play JPG
(photo) files. XP will copy photo files to a CD-R, no problem.
You simply copy the photos to a CD-R and insert the CD in the DVD player. If
this DVD player is less than two years old, it should display the files from
a CD.
If you have not copied photos to a CD-R before, here are some instructions.

To copy photos to CD-R or CD-RW using XP.

1.. Insert a blank CD-R (or CD-RW) into your CD drive. Wait about 15-20
seconds for XP to recognize that a CD-R has been inserted. A window may
open, with a variety of options in it. You don't need any of the options in
this window to copy to a CD-R. There is a Cancel button at the bottom of
this window. Click on it to close this window. If this window does not open,
this is fine just go to step 2.
2.. Click on My Computer and navigate to the folder where your pictures
are located. Open the folder so you can see the files you want to copy.
3.. You now need to select the files you want to copy. Do you want to copy
all the files in the folder? If so, hold the Ctrl key down and press the
letter A. This will select (highlight in blue) all the files in the folder.
If you want to select only some of the files, click on the first file you
want to select. Remove your finger from your mouse, hold the Ctrl key down
and click on the second file you want to select. Continue doing this until
all the files you want to copy are selected. Each time a file is selected it
will be highlighted in blue. If the files you want to select are listed in a
row, you can do it this way. Click on the first file, remove your finger
from the mouse. Hold the Shift key down and click on the last file you want.
All the files between the first and last file you clicked on will be
highlighted in blue.
4.. Once you have selected the files you want to copy, look at the menu on
the left of the selected files. The top menu should be "Picture Tasks". The
last item listed under "Picture Tasks" is "Copy to CD". Click on it. The
other way is to right click on one of the selected pictures. A menu will
open. Click on Send To. Click on your CD drive on the opening list.
5.. The copying process will start (a small window opening at the top of
your screen indicating the progress, wait until completed, also you may not
see this window if you are copying just a few files because the operation is
too fast) and you will get a message, right hand corner bottom of your
screen, "You have files waiting." Click on it.
6.. A window will open. It will show you the photo files you just selected
to copy. Look at the menu on the left and click on "Write these files to CD"
..
7.. A Wizard box will open. Just follow the directions on the screen to
complete the job.
8.. Once you have copied the photos to the CD you may want to copy more to
it in the future. Just insert it instead of inserting a blank CD and follow
the same directions. Just make sure you have enough space on it to add more
photo files. A CD will hold 700 MB but with photo files, don't try to fill
it. Limit to about 200 - 300 photo files per CD and not more than a total of
600 MB. Otherwise it can take a long time to open this CD to view the files,
but if you don't mind the time you can fill it.

Some problems with the above:

1.. You looked for the command "Copy to CD", but it is not there. If so,
repair this way.
Click on Start, click on Run and type the following in the opening textbox:

REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL

And press the Enter key.

Note that there is a space between .32 and SHI..

You did the above, but still no "Copy to CD" command available. Go to step 2
below and check if your drive is set to recording.

2.. You now can find the "Copy to CD" command (or you don't find it) but
it still does not work.
Check if your drive is set for recording. Open My Computer, look under
Devices with removable storage and right click on your CD drive. Click on
Properties. A window will open. Click on the Recording tab at the top of
this window. Then Enable recording. Also, check the box "Eject after
recording" .

You tried this, but you can't find a Recording tab when the window opens. If
so, update the CD driver so it is compatible with XP (particularly if you
upgraded to XP) or something else is wrong as under items 3 or 4 below.

3.. You may have installed some CD copying software to copy music CDs. If
so, this may be interfering with XP. If you use Roxio, update your version
to at least 5.3 or above. If you have Roxio 7, use this to copy photo files.
Copy data instead of copy music. If you have other music CD copying software
make sure you upgrade to a version that will not interfere with XP.
4.. You may have purchased a new computer with a CD/DVD burner. If so, don
't use XP to copy to CD, use the software supplied by the manufacturer and
select the copy data if there is no specific copy photo files option.
5.. Instead of using the Copy to CD command you used the Send to command
and no CD drive is listed there. If you upgraded to XP you should check that
you have a driver for your CD drive compatible with XP or first check that
your drive is Enable for recording as given above. Sometimes you get the
instruction to send to a writable CD drive on the list but you don't get
writable, you get drag and drop or simply the CD drive letter. Click on it,
provided you have checked that the drive is Enabled for recording.
6.. If none of the above works, check the manufacturer web site for a
driver compatible with XP, particularly if you upgraded to XP.

Merci beaucoup! I have Roxio 5.3 and XP and I was able to easily create a
slideshow that played back on my DVD player. Thanks for the detailed answer!

One more question: if I want to get more ambitious what would you recommend,
upgrading to Roxio's latest (7.0) suite or using Microsoft's Digital Imaging
10.0 suite?

I have Roxio 7. Very nice. Great quality. You can't go wrong with this. Will
do basic photo editing but it is really good for getting your photos on CD
or DVD.
I also have MDI 10. Very good for photo editing if you are a beginner. The
manual is not great, half of it is about digital photography instead of
editing but you will certainly benefit from it if you are a beginner, it is
better to know how to take a picture correctly than knowing how to edit it.
This being said, MDI 10 will hold your hand when you edit. Great help as you
go. The best I know in this department for a beginner. Also great if you
want to print. All kind of stuff available for printing with borders, mats,
panorama, etc. etc. If you look around, you can get it for about $60.00 with
the usual rebate ($69.00 at Costco).
You can also download Photo Story 3 for free from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/photostory/default.mspx
This is a little different. With this you can zoom and pan to create action
with your photo files.
A great site to visit if you want to use this is:
http://www.eicsoftware.com/PapaJohn/MM2/MM2.html
Look at the menu on the left under Movie Maker 2 and you will see a folder
for PS3. Open it and get directions.
My opinion about it is it works fine to look at the file on your PC. Don't
waste time making a VCD out of it to look on your TV, and to do so you will
need Roxio 7 anyway. You can't make a VCD or DVD directly from Photo Story
3.
I use it to make a little story (4 or 5 pictures) and e-mail to my grandsons
(even only 4 to 6 pictures with narration and music will make a 1 MB file so
you have to be careful about the file size if you want to e-mail).

Thanks again. I really appreciate your taking the time to write such
detailed answers.

I have Roxio 7 and when I create a DVD slide show and play it on my TV, only
the center of each picture shows. I have descriptions on each photo on the
bottom of the picture. None of the descriptions show when I play the DVD on
my TV set. When I play the DVD on my PC, it looks great, the whole photo is
displayed, including the descriptions. From what I have read so far, the
issue is the TV overscanning. Putting a black border around each picture
will get the whole picture displayed on the TV, but it also includes a
little of the black border. This whole process is a pain in the behind.

I found a progrma that solves my problem, ProShow Gold 2.0. It automatically
puts black borders on whatever pictures you select. It also has two
different sizes of black borders so you can select the one that works best.
Unfortunately there is no standard size black border, so the results on TV
screens will vary.

Great Info on several levels. Here is my question.

I've got several DVD players but only the cheapest will play my JPGs but
only one picture at a time. Do I need to do something different to get a
slide show or is it my "cheap" DVD or is that not currently possible?

Thanks, Terry

Not that easy to answer because DVD players have been increasing in
capabilities and decreasing in price.
I have a Toshiba SD 3800 (purchased two years ago at $129.00) and it will
play JPGs from a CD very well, but no slide show.
Just purchased a Sony SVL D 300P (combo DVD/VHS) for $80.00. I can set it
either way, one picture at a time or slide show for reading JPGs from a CD.
With slide show I can even select the speed at which the pictures will
change, slow, normal or fast!
It is difficult to know exactly what a DVD player will do from looking at
the specifications.

I had no trouble putting my photos onto a CD, but they were there without the
names I had on the photos. Does anyone know how to put the photos on a CD
with the captions?

Not sure what you mean by the "names I had on the photos". Do you mean file
name? Then you mention "captions". Not sure again, how did you make
"captions"?

When I scan a photo into a folder in "My Pictures", I give it a name, I would
like those names to be there when I show them as a slide show, is there a way
to do that?

OK. Yes you can do this.
Go to this site and download the free software:
www.irfanview.com
After you download the software in one of your folder (or make a new folder
to download the file in it) you then double click on the file to install the
software. It will make an icon (Irfanview) on your desktop. Double click on
it to open Irfanview. In Irfanview, click on File and Slideshow. You then
select the folder and start the slide show.
Above each picture, you will see the file name you assigned to them.

Thanks, I'll try that.
