Hi,

I would like to connect to my brother's computer through remote desktop. He
has windows XP and he needs to be the host since I want to do maintenance on
his computer from time to time (he doesn't know about computers). I do have
windows xp professional but I just need to be the client. Is there any
software add that I can tell him to install in order for his computer to
become a host? Or will he has to spend the money and go for the upgrade? If
so, how much is the upgrade from XP Home to Professional?

Thanks in advance,

V.

You can't do remote desktop to a XP Home Edition at just any time. When he
needs help he could ask for remote assistance and then you can take over the
computer. For more on Remote Assistance look at Help & Support...Ask for
Assistance...Invite a friend to connect to your computer with Remote
Assistance. He would have to be at his computer for it to work, but it does
work great. If both of you use Windows Messenger or MSN Messenger you can
also ask for assistance from under the Activities options in messenger.

If you want to connect to his computer at any time you would have to install
Pro on his machine or something like VNC (which is free) or PC Anywhere.

You can get VNC from http://www.realvnc.com/
PC Anywhere from http://www.symantec.com/pcanywhere/Consumer/

Windows XP Pro Upgrade is $200.95 @ NewEgg

But you could purchase it OEM from NewEgg for $147.95, and all you have to
do is purchase a piece of hardware like a new HD or Memory.

An additional comment. While I was in Japan as an exchange student, due to
the proxy in my school, I couldn't use RealVNC as school's proxy only allows
port 80 and 23.

So if RealVNC doesn't work for you, use LogMeIn.

Hope this helps.
