I would like to add a comment - without asking a question- to a ms.newsgroup,
but when I sign in, and go to the 'new' button on the left, and then bring up
'general comment', I can't find anyplace to enter my comment. So how is it
done ?

You just made a general comment.

Now do it again! (-:

No idea. This is a newsgroup, not a forum, and I don't know how the MS web
interface to the groups actually works - I don't use it or recommend it.
What exactly is it you want to write? Might as well just try creating a
post, and make it clear in your subject line that you aren't asking a
question per se. Although I'm not sure I see much value in that, myself.

You might ditch the (clumsy) web interface and start using a news client
instead; the NNTP server is news.microsoft.com and you can sub to as many
groups as you wish.

You just did. However, you will have an easier time posting and get more
out of this resource if you use a newsreader instead of the lame web
interface. Here's the explanation:

Since you are using the web interface, you may not realize that this is
really a newsgroup. You will get far more out of this resource if you
learn to use a newsreader. There are many good newsreaders for Windows,
but you can use Outlook Express since you already have it. Here are

--ooOOoo--

If you are running Windows, in a version recent (at least Windows 2000) and complete (with IE6, Internet Explorer 6, and OE6, Outlook Express 6), then I think your question may be answered more clearly by self-experience; do the following:

1) In your header (hitting <Ctrl><F3> in your message), I read:

X-Newsreader: Microsoft CDO for Windows 2000

so I assume you are viewing this newsgroup in an IE (Internet Explorer) window, using Microsoft web interface for newsgroups.

Which in turn makes me assume you have IE set as default program for web files (if not, search the newsgroup again, and ask again - there are many posts answering this)

2) Make sure you have OE (Outlook Express) set as default program for news items; for this:

a) In "IE > Tools > Internet Options > Programs":

Newsgroups: Outlook Express

b) In "WE (Windows Explorer) > Tools > Folder Options > File Types":

(NONE) URL:News Protocol > Advanced > Edit:

Action: open

Application used to perform action:
"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /newsurl:"%1"

|X| (checked) Use DDE
DDE Message: (blank)
Application: msimn
DDE Application not running: (blank)
Topic: System

3) Once the above is set right, in the IE window where you are probably reading me right now, click this link:

news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general

This should automatically set several things that will help you: Outlook Express will open its main window, and create a News account for the "msnews.microsoft.com" News server, create a "microsoft.public.windowsxp.general" folder in that account for the particular newsgroup where we are.

If OE doesn't guide you into creating a news account under your name for visiting the "msnews.microsoft.com" server, then do so:

OE > Tools > Accounts > News > Add > News

and follow the Wizard, accepting all default answers, unless you have to enter the news server name, "msnews.microsoft.com". Accept to load the (names of) newsgroups.

By exploring OE main window you will discover a lot of things interesting and useful to read newsgroups and participate in them.
