How to log maximum commit charge/virtual memory over time ?

I'm trying to capture the maximum "commit charge" over say a month of
operation, to see what max virtual memory I really use, and how much paging
file I really need. I'd like to reduce it a little from the default of
766MB/1500MB for 512MB ram, space is tight on my C: drive. At the moment the
max I ever see is about 700/800MB, after a full day at work with Outlook
2003, Word/Excel/Powerpoint2003, IE6, and a pile of utilities and apps, so I
think 300/400MB paging file would be fine. I'm happy to have the very rare
failures when I run far too much crap on my machine.
Thanks !

there is some arcane reason why the default is 150% -
but I don't know what it is.

I ran a 256MB box at virtual memory setting of 300 / 900 with
absolutely no ill effects. I think once in two years I got a
message that my pagefile size had been increased.

Of course, it's increased for the life of that boot, but the
actual default settings remained at 300 / 900 and were set again
once the system was rebooted.
Cheers,
Dave

Thanks everyone.
That log facility is good, i will log when I exceed various limits, like
750MB, 1000MB.
Plus if the extra paging file lasts only for the current login, that's an
easy solution too. Provided I have space and it's not too fragmented I guess.
But a few passes of defrag seems to open up plenty of room for next time.
Thanks !
