How to keep column headings from being sorted with data?

I occasionally have to re-sort my Excel file data by a different column and
then back to Last name. Every time, my headings sort with the other data and
it's a hassel getting the row back at the frozen top.
Is there a setting to keep the top row from sorting with the rest?

Yes.

In the Sort dialog, there is a choice: My data range has Header row/No header row

Generally it helps to have the titles formatted differently.

i.e. Bold or Centered or similar.

Then make sure under Data>Sort>My Date Range Has "header row" checked.

Save the workbook and the setting should stick.
