How can I interrupt and terminate the download of XP's SP2, which I
accidentally allowed to start automatically from the Microsoft site?

I'm pretty sure that's what it is. Something is continuously chatting.

Unfortunately it is using up my allocated broadband traffic allowance,
and I don't want to run out before the end of the month - please help!

That's what I call "thinking outside the box" - it gets 10/10 :-)

Unfortunately I was after an answer to apply "inside the box",
i.e. what do I need to zap, where is it, how do I zap it please?

Turning off automatic Windows Updates might do the job.

Nop - 'fraid not (about the first thing I tried) :-(

You're welcome.
