I have a question that I would like to post on the plain and simple MS word
group. what is the best way of finding that particular group from the
hundreds of 'windows' entries on the newsgroups main pages. As yopu can see
i have the XP group located after much messing about for hours and hours.
there must be a easier way.

use a newsreader and set up your News server as msnews.microsoft.com.

How to set up OE as a News reader: (there are others....)

Use a real newsreader instead of the awful web interface. This is
extremely easy to do (see information below). If you can't do that - or
don't want to - here is a list of all the MS public newsgroups:

About using newsgroups:

Since you are using the web interface, you may not realize that this is
really a newsgroup. You will get far more out of this resource if you
learn to use a newsreader. There are many good newsreaders for Windows,
but you can use Outlook Express since you already have it. Here are some
links to information about newsgroups:

In OE, click news.microsoft.com (or whatever you've named the server) in
the Folders pane, click the "Newsgroups" button in the right pane. Type
"Word" (no quotes) into the "Display newsgroups which contain:" pane,
and select from the 46, or so, groups. "microsoft.public.word.newusers"
might be what you need unless you have a query specific to mail,
programming, etc..

All the public newsgroups start with microsoft.public, and are alphabetical
after that, so maybe scrolling down to microsoft.public.word might get you
there?

X-Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.3028 per details in your
post.

Select msnews.microsoft.com on your left pane.
Select newsgroups in the right pane.
Type in "word" without quotation marks. Move the bar just left of the
descriptor to see the full newsgroup name. Select, then Subscribe to those
that sound promising.
