How to get PPPoE to setup properly in XP Pro

I just upgraded 98SE to XP Pro. I have 4 computers
networked via 2 hubs that also connect to the aDSL modem
for Earthlink. I have all 4 computers talking to each
other just fine. However, I cannot setup my PPPoE
connection on the XP box for some reason. I go to the New
Connection Wizard, choose Connect to the Internet, choose
Set up my connection manually, choose Connect using a
broadband connection that requires a user name and
password, fill in ISP name with Earthlink.net, fill in
Username and Password, leave all 3 checkboxes checked,
click Finish and I get a new connection under Dial-up
named Earthlink.net with a type of Dial-up and a Status of
Unavailable - device missing.

When I talked to Earthlink about this, they were confused
that a Broadband category was not created.

Under LAN or High-Speed Internet I have my 2 connections:
Local Area Connection, which has its Automatic Private
Address and all,
1394 Connection-this is part of my SBAudigy card, but I
have it disabled at the moment as I don't use it at all.

What am I missing or what should I look for to get the
PPPoE setup going? Everything worked just fine before the
upgrade and now it is totally gone.

Thanks,
Mitch

Check you WAN Miniport (PPPOE) in Device Manager to verify that it is
enabled and working
My Computer --> Properties --> Hardware --> Device Manager -->
View --> Show Hidden Devices
Make sure that the PPPOE Miniport is not banged out or disabled.
If it is disabled, try and enable it and see if it works

The WAN Miniport is enabled and XP says it is working
properly. XP is using its default driver, dated July 2001.
There are 3 other WAN Miniports, IP, L2TP, and PPTP. All
are "working properly." Should I try uninstalling the
PPPoE port and letting it reinstall itself or is there a
way to get newer drivers for it without having the XP
machine online?

Did you get a chance to check in event viewer to see if it listed any ras
errors?
My computer --> Manage --> Event Viewer --> System

You might want to take a look at these two KB's and see it they help fix
your issue:

You Cannot Create a Network Connection After You Restore Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;329441

Dial-up Modem or PPPoE Option in New Connection Wizard Is Unavailable
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;320558

If that fails, and you don't want to do an reinstall, give a call to Msft
PSS
and they have a RAS repair tool that might be able to fix your problem
