How to get my files to open up with the correct program

I recently changed the batteries in my wireless mouse and keyboard. I guess
that I reset the hardware and aAdware thought that I was changing the
registry. After that I had to choose which program to use to open a file that
was a word document, now all my programs are opening up in word, even the
calculator. I am unable to use sytem restore, it opens up with word too. I
did run a scan disk but it didn't fix it. I feel really stupid. Also when I
open up most of the word documents, it asks me which code to use (windows,
Ms-DOS, etc.) I am stumped.

I'm not entirely sure what happened there but sounds interesting. Just a guess maybe you added a file association for exe to open to Word.

In Explorer or My Computer in the Menu go to,
Tools | Folder Options (Click File Type Tab)
Look for an association for .EXE that is pointing to Word.
If you find one Delete it out of there. Hope that helps.

John,
Thank you for your response.
I downloaded this file, but nothing happened. I tried to save to the desktop
and just opening it. I wonder if my computer is so messed up that it can't
open it.

Try it with the .bat file:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/xp_fileassoc.zip

It's a ziped file. Unzip it and then run the .bat file.

If you can't run the above .bat file try repairing the .exe file
association with this:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/xp_exe_fix.zip It contains a .reg
file to fix the .exe association, double click the .reg file and it
should merge to the registry. If it can't or doesn't merge to the
registry you will have to open regedit.exe with the Task Manager and
import the file. See here for basic instructions:

Thanks Calvin & John, John, I am getting tired, will give it a try again
tomorrow.
Somehow everything is redirected to open in word and so far I am not able to
fix it.

A shift/right-click will add the Open With option to the context menu.
Click the .zip file, shift/right-click, click Open With, and select an
unzip program to open the .zip file. Hopefully you have one on your
machine.

Sorry, I thought I was replying in a W98 NG. I doubt the Open With
option will be available, even with a shift/right-click.

"Shift key" not needed, just r-click.

Okay, I am getting very confused. Is there any way to run system restore for
XP by using the Dos command? Would that fix my problem. No matter what I do I
keep having everything open up in word.
Thank you

Copied from Windows Help and support

To run System Restore in safe mode
Access System Restore through Help and Support.
Follow the instructions on your screen.
Notes

To access the System Restore Wizard, click Start, and then click Help
and Support. Click Performance and Maintenance, click Using System
Restore to undo changes, and then click Run the System Restore Wizard.
While the computer is in safe mode, System Restore does not create any
restore points. Therefore, you cannot undo a restoration that you
performed when the computer was in safe mode.
You can use System Restore to restore your computer to any restore point
while in safe mode. If you cannot start the computer in standard mode,
you can use System Restore to restore to a time when you could start the
computer without errors.
To restore to a time when your computer started without errors, select a
restore point as close to the time you remember it last started without
errors.
If System Restore is suspended because of insufficient disk space, you
cannot enable it by making more disk space available while in safe mode.
You must restart the computer in standard mode and make more disk space
available.

Thanks, but nothing happens, it is probably trying to open in word too? My
last attempt is to try and figure out if there is a dos command to run system
restore.
I think that when I was changing the batteries in my mouse & keyboard, I
actually highlighted something without knowing and changed some setting on my
pc. I guess it is important to turn the power off before changing batteries!

I did find that link and I did select that one, I have tried to save it on
the desktop and in a new folder that I created, but nothing happens? I have
tried to extract it?
Can you tell me exactly what I should do after selecting that exe file assoc
fix? I am very dumb! I don't even know how you would be able to reinstall
windows, since the control panel is disabled too, maybe format the hard drive
would do it?
Thanks, (sleepless in Cleveland)

It is a zip file. If it won't open or is unrecognized, I suggest the Zip
file fix on the page. It boils down to working your way back to a normal
system.

Thanks for your help.
I feel like I am about 6 years old, when I run that Zip fix file it opens as
a word pad document and nothing else happens.
There just does not seem to be any way to get around this.

Cyndy

Humm, does "My Computer" open? If so, can you click Tools, Folder
Options, File Types, scroll down to "REG", select it and then click the
Restore button?

Bob,
The Restore button is not an option after scrolling down to Reg and
selecting it. My choices are: Advance, change, new or delete. It says that it
opens up with wordpad.
Thank you

Sorry if I missed this, but from there, if you click Change, select the
Registry editor, etc.

As far as System Restore goes, try pressing F10 upon reboot. On some
systems, that opens a restore console of some type.

In addition to what Joe said, look in advanced button and "Merge" should
have

regedit.exe "%1"

As the application to run.
