Please advise on how to format the hard disk when the
operating system is Windows XP.

I have a bug in the system that has a one minute timer
that shuts down the computer everytime I am using it.

I would appreciate any help.

Thanks,
Basil

Have you checked for the msblaster virus.??
But to format the HD you need to boot from the XP CD and follow the prompts
remember all data will be lost, so if you have anything important try to
save it first.

No need to format:
To stop the reboots: Go to Start/Run and type in: services.msc. Scroll down
to Remote Procedure Call (RPC)/Recovery/First Failure/Restart the Service.

Close Windows Explorer, run the edit on line 257 which includes the prompt
for the patch once your system has been cleaned. This script removes all
variants of the W32.Blaster.Worm (original, b and c).

Basil,

You do not have a bug - you have a virus.
See here for more information and removal.

You do not need to reinstall Windows XP

You need to restart you're PC and go into the BIOS and
change the boot priority to CD ROM for the fist drive.
That usually done by pushing the Delete key or F2 when
you're machine is rebooting. Once you changed the boot
device order open the cd rom drive and insert the XP
disk. Then save you're changes in the bios and when the
machine reboots it will boot off of the disk and take you
through the steps to redo the system. You'll create a
partition and to install on. Then you'll have the option
to do a quick or regular Format. Don't choose Quick.

Good Luck,
Brent

You do it as part of a reinstall of the system after booting the XP CD
direct. Enter Setup, and after the license agreement take New Install.
When it asks you to confirm where, hit ESC; select and delete the
current partition and make a new RAW one to be formatted at the next
stage

But first check out information on the BLAST worm that is now going
around - this sounds as if this is what you have, and cleaning up is a
*bit* easier than doing a full reinstall. Go to

and the left hand item in line 257
