Hi!

I was wondering if anyone might be able to point me in the direction o
where to find temp files on my laptop. I would like to use th
computer's search function for finding them, but don't know if I can, o
what extension to use, etc. The temp files I specifically need to fin
are for OpenOffice.

I am a newbie to this (and to all things computer!), and so I think
should probably also ask the next logical question, too. If I am abl
to locate the temp files, are there specific instructions for being abl
to view the text inside?

I'm sure that there is so much else I don't know about this, and that
don't even know to ask about, so please know that any other advice woul
be oh so very appreciated!

I just can't thank you enough! It means so much to me!

Happy happy day to you!

What actually is the purpose of looking for temp files? What do you
want to do with them?

Often created automatically by a software program, usually as a backup or
cache file; sometimes created as an invisible file and automatically deleted
when the program is closed; may also be called a "temp file." - Source
http://www.fileinfo.net/extension/tmp -
Temp files extension is ".TMP" . I dont no where Open office excatly stores
the Temp files. Most Probaly open office would store temp files in these
areas
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data.
C:\Documents and Settings\User name\Local Settings\Application Data.

Hi Karen,

I was wondering if anyone might be able to point me in the direction of
where to find temp files on my laptop. I would like to use the
computer's search function for finding them, but don't know if I can, or
what extension to use, etc. The temp files I specifically need to find
are for OpenOffice.

The easiest way to find temp (or any other) files in Windows is probably
via 'Start ... Search ... All Files', using '*.tmp' (without quotes - it
means 'all files with a .tmp filename extension') to list whatever's on the
computer. The ones you'd be looking for (that have been created by
OpenOffice) will be somewhere in the OpenOffice folder - see the 'In Folder'
column: the rest would be in places such as Windows/Temp. OO claims to use
the '.tmp' FNE to identify it temporary files, so you should be OK. You
could also double-check Search's findings by opening the OO folder and
looking there - and if you find them, keep the window open and use the
right-click method (see below) to examine them.

I am a newbie to this (and to all things computer!), and so I think I
should probably also ask the next logical question, too. If I am able
to locate the temp files, are there specific instructions for being able
to view the text inside?

The temp files should be readable with Notepad - try right-clicking the
Search-listed files one at a time, and select either Notepad or OpenOffice
from 'Open with' (depending on what's made available to you). You should
then have the option to use copy/paste between Notepad and OO, or save the
file under a new name in order to retrieve the lost text. I'm assuming that
you're looking for temp files that remained behind after a Windows crash
occurred during an OO session?

I'm sure that there is so much else I don't know about this, and that I
don't even know to ask about, so please know that any other advice would
be oh so very appreciated!

That's just about it, actually :o)
I just can't thank you enough! It means so much to me!
Happy happy day to you!

Please post a reply to the group if this advice works for you.

Philip
