How to enable 4GB RAM in Vista client?

You're still wrong, even after back pedaling. PAE won't make Vista "see"
4 GB either. What is the point of "seeing" 4 GB if it can't be USED?

32 bit Vista is limited to USING around 3.2 - 3.5 GB physical RAM,
depending on your MB and installed hardware. Nothing you can do will
change this.

Now, it appears that with SP1, 32 bit Vista will "report" that 4 GB RAM is
installed, instead of the 3.2 - 3.5 GB. But it still won't USE more than
the 3.2 - 3.5 GB. 32 bit Vista is limited to 32 bits of address space.
The PAE 36 bit hack has been intentionally disabled on 32 bit Vista to
prevent the driver issues that result from using PAE.

If you need 4 GB (or more) RAM to be actually USED - not just "seen" -
then you need 64 bit Vista.

End of story.

experience, and tries to make people think he knows what he is talking
about.

How to verify 4GB RAM in using?

If you are asking about 32-bit Vista, you can't.

All 32-bit versions of Windows (not just Vista) have a 4GB address
space. That's the theoretical upper limit beyond which you can not go.
But you can't use the entire 4GB of address space. Even though you
have a 4GB address space, you can only use *around* 3.1GB of RAM.
That's because some of that space is used by hardware and not
available to the operating system and applications. The amount you can
use varies, depending on what hardware you have installed, but is
usually around 3.1GB.

Note that the hardware is using the address *space*, not the actual
RAM itself. The rest of the RAM goes unused because there is no
address space to map it too.

Also, note that, starting with SP1, Vista now *reports* the entire
4GB, even though it can't use it all. Microsoft thinks that's an
improvement, but I think it's downright misleading.

i know this is not my business, but you may be wrong. the reason why i say
this, is i am a computer geek, i am able to look at it and be able to tell
what the problem is before even opening the case and i am 99% right most of
the times. i am i guess like a computer whisperer, any hardware of software
issues, i am able to fix it but when i come here, i feel like i know
nothing. and the reason for this, is even tho i am a geek. you guys are like
the kings and queens of geek. so he might actually know what he is talking
about, he is probably talking about something he has seen. so personaly i
would be carefull before calling him a smacktard, or saying he has no
experience. he might be like me...... overwhelmed by your geekness ;-)

i second that, but i am sure it will help microsoft like you said: they
probably will get less calls since most plp won't actually check whether the
whole 4 gb is being used, they will just assume it is, even tho it's not

another way, microsoft managed to lie to us, and make us think that windows
is great.

lol

That was the best answer I read.

If they change it again, they should say 4GB Installed, 3.123GB Usable

But I suspect 32 bit is going to be short lived.

lol i completly agree with you, i think windows sucks big time, people who
buy windows are buying nothing but a OS of bugs. but at the same time, i use
it and i also help people with it. the only thing different between is, i
actually hate windows and microsoft, but other than that we are really
similar. ;-)

Thank you.

Yes, but I would be amazed to see them change it again.

I don't think it has a long life ahead of it, but it's not going away
in the next year or two. There are a lot of people out there running
Windows on 32-bit hardware, and they not are all going to be replacing
their hardware tomorrow.

Unfortunately Jonathan he IS a smacktard, troll, dimwit, choose your
pejorative. This will become readily apparent after you read a few posts of
his, and the others like him.

well i am not a smacktard, and i like to decide for my self my opinion of
plp, i don't let others blindly tell me what to think. and from what i have
seen so far, i don't think he is. only time will tell. but i have to agree
with him, frank does post things that are out there, but you don't see me
writing post which are questionable, since for one thing i like peace, i
like when people are friends and not arguing or fighting, i am not saying
that is what is happening here, i am only saying that's what i like, so i
pretty much stay out of posts which are negative.
