How to edit a mail merge main document?

Hello!

I am trying to edit a mailmerge main document. When I go to open it, I get

"xyz.doc is a mail merge main document. Word cannot find its data souce
jkl.txt"

[find data source] [options]

I strike "options" and I get [remove data / header source] or [remove all
merge info].

I just want to add some text to the main document and it is turning out to
be much harder than I would have expected! :O(

How do I effect this, please? Never worked on this before.

2. What's the data source?
