I have a laptop connected to my office LAN that uses static IP's. My home
ISP is Cox Cable which uses dynamic IP's. Is there any way to configure my
XP Home laptop so that I can just unplug it from the office and plug it
into my home network without reconfiguring the IP settings?

Sony Laptop
Windows XP Home, SP-2 and all updates

Thanks..

John,

Under TCP/IP Properties, you have two tabs - General and Alternate. You can
setup a dynamic configuration (DHCP client) under General, for your home LAN.
If you're not on your home LAN, you can setup the Alternate configuration for
your office LAN.

Your office LAN settings, if fixed, are probably setup under General.

First write down all of the settings under General. Be careful to get every
detail correct here.

Next, copy all those settings to Alternate, replacing "Automatic private IP
address". Once that's done, then select "Obtain IP address automatically" and
"Obtain DNS server addresses automatically" under General.

That will take care of the low level physical network settings. Is the office a
domain or workgroup? If a domain, there will be additional settings, though not
under TCP/IP. If there's a domain admin for the office, please involve him, for
everybody's sake.

Chuck,

That did it...thanks! By the way, the office is on a peer to peer
workgroup.
