hi
i'm wondering how to do a clean install of windows xp. Do you have to dealet
the partition and creat a new one or format it (for a clean install)

Clean install means Format the Windows partition and then install window
over the formatted partition. It will not affect any other partition.

All this can be done by booting from the Windows XP installation CD.
Formatting is fine, though it doesn't hurt to delete the current partition
and then install to that space. Here is a link for info on how to do a
clean install.

If this question is related to your later question, if you are using an
retail upgrade XP disk to install clean, then yes you must insert the CD for
the qualifying product. If you don't have one you'll need to get one. A
win98 CD works fine and can be had for cheap on eBay.

Simply boot from the WinXP SP1a installation CD. You'll be offered
the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

Format first, then reinstall. You can fdisk if you want to, but it's
usually unnecessary unless you want or need to change some partitions
around.
