should be done on client machine or server? Which registry key should I
change?

Hi PoorGal,
I dont know the registry key for Recovering Deleted Items,
but you can try to change this key

PSTNullFreeOnClose change the Value from O to 1 and you deleted Datas from

You want to remove the functionality or the option?
-functionality; these are the retention settings for the mailbox. Settings
are made on the Exchange server
-option; disable the button by using GPO. The button ID is 5654

This is not related. This KB file discusses the background process of
compacting the pst-file and reusing white spaces. It has nothing to to with
the retention settings on an Exchange server.
