To do Firmware upgrade 1.0b to my SONY DRU 540A DVD writer, SONY asks me to
"Diable [DMA setting] in Windows" before commencing the firmware upgradee. I
tried to locate this in the Help & Support in XP but could find it. Can
anyone help pls.

In device Manager. click on IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers; Click on the channel
where the drive is located (Primary or Secondary); Click on the Advanced
Setting Tab, and select the option under the drive.

Note: If you have an Intel based motherboard and have the Intel Application
Accelerator installed, you will have to uninstall the Intel Application
Accelerator in order to access the above. Update the firmware being sure to
follow the directions very carefully. After your system reboots, repeat the
above procedure to change the drive back to Ultra DMA mode; or re-install
the Intel Application Accelerator (it's on the Intel website) and reboot.

In Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager
Providing you use regular IDE drivers from Microsoft, go to
IDE ATAPI/ATA Disk controllers and in that either the Primary channel or
secondary channel, depending on where the drive is connected. Double
click, and on the Advanced page select Device 0 or Device 1
appropriately (note - Primary channel Device 0 will be your hard disk,
leave that alone), and set the Transfer mode to PIO only, click Apply
and OK out.

Some third party drivers like VIA 4 in 1 do not give any option though

Alex;

Just FYI for future reference; I have several machines running the VIA
4in1, and they all have that option available. The only motherboard driver
I have seen that overrides the option in Device Manager is the Intel
Application Accelerator.
