How to detect why an XP pro system sometimes fails to shut down?

Here's a problem I've been struggling with for years. One of my XP Pro
systems (fully up to date with updates) quite often hangs on shut down. It
does not do this all of the time but quite often. The system itself has been
running for a couple of years and has the usual collection of software,
enough so that I'd rather not start all over from ground zero and reinstall
everything but I would dearly love to solve this particular problem. Is
there anyway to set up some sort of system monitoring thing so that I can
have some small hope of finding where the system is hanging on shut down?
