Hello everyone..

I have read posts in this forum regarding disabling
Windows Messenger for XP, but I want to permanently
remove it.

I have found a better program (Trillian) to suit my IM
needs, and I want to kill Windows Messenger in any way
possible.

If someone knows how to do this (editing registry) or
what not, please tell me, as this stupid program is
always sucking up memory even if i do "disable" it.

Also, will removing programs screw up other programs such
as Outlook Express?

Thanks.

Greetings Bill,

To remove Windows Messenger, close down Messenger if it's running (right click the messenger
icon in the notification area/system tray and click close). Then click the start button,
then click Run and type in (copy-paste if you like):

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Then click OK.
Messenger will then be uninstalled. For more detailed instructions and screenshots, go to,

Then, to remove the Messenger Outlook Express integration (to avoid problems), make sure
Outlook Express is closed, then download and run this .reg file:

One thing i haven't seen anyone doing is to disable Windows Messenger from
the group policy of their PC. Unchecking "Automatically Run Messenger when i
log on to Windows" and so on don't really help when outlook or IE call
messenger, Messenger will still run. Disabling it from the GP is far more
effective than removing it especially for those who do not plan to use
messenger at all. Removing messenger causes some of the other functions not
to work properly even if you have MSN messenger installed.
When you open the RUN command, type in gpedit.msc
That will open the group policy editor
There are two sections, User configuration or Computer configuration
If you want it disabled for all users use the computer configuration
Under that goto Administrative Templates | Windows Components | Windows
Messenger
There are two options "Do not allow Windows Messenger to be run" and "Do not
automatically start Windows Messenger initially"
Right click on one then and enable them to get the desired result.
This will stop Windows Messenger from starting up even if it is called by an
application such as OE and so on

Thanks
Raphael
