I am not a computer expert, but I am offering my experience.
I deleted AVG so that I could use Avast. When I was doing a chkdsk, I
saw a file named AVG6B_F.DAT on the root. I read up on proper deletion
procedures for XP PRO and did the following.
When I had gone to C:\Windows from Recovery I typed:
cd ..
That took me to C:
I then typed:
attrib -r AVG6B_F.DAT
attrib -h AVG6B_F.DAT
I then typed:
copy AVG6B_F.DAT AVGBAK6B_F.DAT
When I rebooted to Win XP, I used the search function to find
AVG6B_F.DAT , and then I deleted it (it will ask you whether you want
to delete this system file).
I then rebooted and, when everything seemed to be working fine, I used
search to find AVGBAK6B_F.DAT, and then deleted that.
My system seems fine without this file.
Perhaps an expert will comment on this.

Judy
