Tools->options->other->check the box to empty deleted items on closing
Outlook.
Hint - the deleted items folder is like the kitchen trash bin where you put
all of the food you don't want, scraps, peelings, etc. You empty that once
a day, at least, correct? There is a reason the icon for deleted items is a
trash can - empty it daily. If you want to keep items pending deletion to
decide on its worth, create a pending deletion folder. Please don't keep
your lunch in the trash.

After furious head-scratching, paulg asked this group:
| My deleted items folder is full and will not allow me access. How do
| I clear it out?
