I have an icon on my desktop which cannot be deleted by right clicking on
it- the delete function isn't present.

Anyone got any ideas how it can be deleted. I'm a bit wary of editing the
registry file unless I know what I'm doing. It could cause my computer to
crash terminally.

The file comes from the remnants of an ISP installation disc.

Depends:

To remove: Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to one of these keys or
both:

Desktop Icons
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace

Control Panel Icons
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ControlPanel\NameSpace

My Computer
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MyComputer\NameSpace

Other than the above, try the information I provided via your last post and
here:

Go to Start/Run and type in: msconfig. Go to the Startup Tab and uncheck
accordingly. Then run this script to remove the disabled items from the
registry.

Tip:

Clear Disabled Items from Msconfig Startup and Selective Startup (Line 148)

Or...remove the runkeys from here: Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

What happens when you highlight the file and hit the delete key on your
keyboard?
