How to customize the new blank workbook

I remember Excel 4 allowed the user to change the blank worksheet that comes
up when you chosse File/New by storing any worksheet in a specific folder
and renaming it sheet.xlt...

That was great and was also 10 years ago!

How does it work now on Excel 2000?

I would like to remove the gridlines, have the outline summary rows above
and left of details, have the cell format set by default to Number (with
thousand separator), vertical alignement set to top, wrap on, have
date/time, my name, and filename in the footer.... all this by default
instead of doing it manually every time I start a new workbook.

Is that still possible?

Many thanks.

Stefano

Hi Stefano

To do so, save your default workbook (template) in the XLSTART folder
(generally found in C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\
Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART on Windows, and in Applications/Microsoft
Office X/Office/Startup/Excel under Mac OS X). Once you have done this,
Excel will automatically use whichever workbook(s) you have in here as
the
default.

You can create a new default template, with your preferred settings:

Open a new workbook.
Format the sheets as desired
Choose Save As
From the Save As Type dropdown, choose Template (*.xlt)
Name the File "Book.xlt"
Save it in the XLStart folder
(usually in Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office)

When you click the New button on the toolbar, the new workbook will be
based on this template.

If you want new sheets to be inserted with the same settings, you can
create a sheet template.

Follow the steps for creating a workbook template, but:
-- create a workbook with only one sheet
-- save as Sheet.xlt
