How to copy a user account with the settings?

I have a slight problem that I want to solve in as simple a way as
possible. Hopefully I can get some advice here...

About 3 months ago I got myself a new DELL PC to replace a 4 year old
unit. This has Win XP-Pro with SP2 etc.
I have spent a long time now setting up all of my software and tuning
my preferences and settings.

Now the challenge:
I have attached the PC to a domain in order to be part of that and now
the user account problem arises. When I log on to the PC with my
domain account a copmpletely new profile is created with *nothing*
entered regarding personal preferences.

How can I copy all of my preferences and settings from the local PC
account into the domain profile???

I have tried to make a copy of my local profile in Documents and
settings (while logged in as the administrator of the PC), but XP
won't let me copy the NTUSER.dat file, which I think holds the HKCU
part of the registry.

Is there a magic trick whereby one can transfer all of the settings
from one profile to the other on the same PC?
Especially when one profile is local and the other is a domain account
profile.

if you are able to see the hidden files under the user, you should be able
to copy all of your mail profiles, desktop and favorites....copy to the new
user profile.

but you have to be able to see the hidden files...which you can open through
my computer/tools/view

Especially when one profile is local and the other is a domain account
profile.

Here is information from MVP Torgeir Bakken on doing this. I kept the
notes in response to a post, which is included.

Copy local (Workgroup) profile to Domain profile from Torgeir Bakken:

The original post:
I have several machines that are currently running in workgroup mode
or an existing domain to which I do not have access to. I have access
to the local administrator password on each machine. I need to bring
these machines into a new SBS2003 Domain. In doing so each user will
be created a new local profile based on their new logon.

I am having trouble finding the right tool(s) that will allow me to
migrate their old profile settings from the profile located on their
XP Pro Workstation, to their new logon profile.

Torgeir's answer and other links, etc.:

We solve this by (in the registry) changing the profile path for the new
user to point to the old user's profile folder (the user needs to log
on at least once first).

If the user is not a local admin, you might need to to something on the
permission side. Use tip 4631 and 2240 in the 'Tips & Tricks' at
