did just that, said all's ok. Now wher to go from here computer still too
slow, Is there a program which can test the CPU?

Tell us the specs of your system and which version of XP you are running..
motherboard....CPU.....amt of RAM and type...Video.....HD's how many? how
big? how much free space?
Some system are just slow........others get that way over time due to a lack
of maintenace...too full a HD....Caches not cleared out....HD never error
checked/never defragged/

A bad stick of RAM or bad CPU generally will not cause your system to be
slow, it will cause crashing and lockups, as a starting point you shouldn't
be looking at your hardware, you should be looking at software, or a lack of
hardware, such as sufficient RAM.

Thank you peter. 2.8 Mhz cpu - 1024 ddr pc 3600 - 370 gig hd (2) - the usual
additions eg. burner (2) 1.44 ffd - plenty of effective cooling - gagabyte mb
- ati radeon 9550 256mb -
cache clared periodically, so too the prefech file and bi-monthly disk
scanned and defragged

Good starting point...not great but good
Which Gigabyte mobo?? you said 2 HD?? each 320g?? how much free space??
How big a pagefile??
check hd under device manager..specifically IDE controller...DMA on? write
caching on??
When was the last time you updated the mobo drivers??
What specifically seems slow to you?? start up?? Internet?? starting
programs?? running programs??
