How to change =SUM(R[-56]C:r[-1]c) to =SUM(D1:D2)

Former version of Excel was easy and straightforward. However, our French
office has started usig the formula =SUM(R[-56]C:r[-1]c) to add columns which
we do not understand and cannot change. Once we opened a document with this
formula, it changed everything in Excel to this formula, as well as making
the the column indicators numerical rather than alphabetical. We would like
to change the formula and revert back to the standard Excel versions we use
here in the US.

Any help would be appreciated.
 
This solution was the easy way to do it in the old version of Excel, but we
could not find Tools, etc. in the 2007 version. I finally did a search in
Help for Tools, and found the answer. Thank you tho for your prompt reply.

Click the Office Button (the round circular icon in the upper left corner of
the window), click the "Excel Options" button in the bottom of the dialog
box that comes up, select Formulas from the left-hand list and unset the
"R1C1 reference style" option located in the "Working with formulas"
section.
