How to calibrate a monitor?

How I must calibrate a monitor? I mean its colors, brightness, constrast,
gamma, ...

I figure there must be some calibrating images to download out there.

Oh, there are plenty of images out there, but how are you going to
calibrate your monitor with one of them? If you had a downloaded
MacGrath chart, does your monitor adjustments allow you fine enough
tuning that you can get all the colors right? How are you going to know
if the colors are right? Do you have a standardized print of a MacGrath
chart to compare it to?

I used the Adobe Gamma program that came with Photoshop to calibrate my
monitor for many years. It is way better than just guessing. However, it
really wasn't good enough. I couldn't quite get it right. The profiled
prints just weren't the right colors. I'd be very close, but many
pictures needs more manual work to get it right.

So, I finally bought a ColorVision Spyder2. Now my prints look just like
what I saw on the screen. It is much more accurate. It was worth the $149.
