L.S.,

I've just updated my computer at home form windows 98 to
Windows XP. Now I would like to update windows XP. But at
home I have a 56k internet connection, while at the
university 10/110MB. I would like to download the patches
updates ect. to the hard drive so I can put them on a USB
stick or burn them on CD (depends on the size) so I can
update my computer at home. How can I do that?

Thanks a lot, Koos

Hi

You can "pre-download" updates from the Windows Update Catalog...

HOW TO: Download Windows Updates and Drivers from the Windows Update Catalog

Download two files from MS - Service Pack 1a, and the XP Rollup 1
package. Those two files contain almost all of the updates to date,
with a few exceptions. Those few exceptions can be downloaded over
your dialup much quicker than the service pack/rollup combo.

Get the download of SP1a (if your XP CD does not already include it)
from
http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/default.asp

(on the right of the page - a 130 MB download).

Then go to
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...00-D7BE-48E3-ABCC-961602BD72C2&displaylang=en

Which will probably wrap - or link to it as the 'Download the 826939
package' about a quarter way down
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;826939

Which rolls up most other items.

Then go to Windows Update and on the left Windows Update Catalog (you
may need to use 'Personalise' to have that offered). In that go to Find
Updates for systems; in that Windows XP SP1, select Critical Updates and
service packs, and choose there to put in a download basket. Get the
Cumulative Security update for Internet Explorer - Q 824145. I would
not bother with any of the stuff on .NET framework unless you know you
will be dealing with programs that want to use it - and as yet it is
mainly for development
