Hi

After making a boot disk for Windows XP, I can't seem to
access any other drives, i.e., c: d: etc., how do I
access the files on other drives, when I'm in Dos-mode in
XP ? Please reply.

If your hard disk is NTFS formatted, a DOS boot disk is about useless.
Also, the one that XP creates does not have CD-ROM support. Open Help and
Support and search for "Recovery Console". This is about as close as you'll
get to DOS Mode, with the exception of Safe Mode with Command Prompt.

Hello!
you can boot from startup floppy disks or CD-ROM, choose
repair option during setup, and run Recovery Console. When
you are logged on, you can run FIXMBR command to fix MBR.

There simply is none. Windows XP Home is not a DOS-based OS. There is no
real booting to DOS unless, say,you stick a DOS floppy in drive A: and boot
from that.

You *can* hit F8 and choose "Safe Mode with Command Prompt", but you will
soon discover that it is really just a window running that's been maximized.
You can get your Start Button and Tasbar back via Task Manager.

Windows XP does do DOS emulation:

Start > Run > type in "command" > hit Enter

And Windows XP has its own 32-bit command line system:

Start > Run > type in "cmd" > hit Enter

If you want to work with files etc. with a command prompt use "cmd". If you
want to go 'full screen' then hit Alt + Enter.

Hi

Thanx for your reply. My purpose is to make my Toshibha
DVD-ROM 2502 1915 drive region free, I need to flash-ROM
by loading hex file from Real Dos-Mode, any inputs to
flash it from MS-DOS is highly appreciated. Once again
thanx for your reply.

you should be able to get a bootdisk from
www.bootdisk.com

Windows98 or similar will do.
But, to access your CDROM from DOS,
it may or may not need a driver.

On the other hand, the FLASH prog may work
just fine.

If they are in NTFS format then DOS cannot handle them without
additional software. A program allowing you to read NTFS from DOS is
available for free - (get the zip with manual)

Support allowing writing as well is very expensive

But for most repair work, the approach is to boot the CD to Recovery
mode Boot the XP CD and, instead of Setup, take the immediate R for
Repair. Assume any password requested is blank, and TAB over.

See Help and Support, search on "Recovery Console Commands"
