how to archive outlook 2000 items by year

I am looking for step bystep instructions on how to archive items in Outlook
2k by year.
Eg I would like to end up with all items in 1998, 1999, and 2000 in
different archived pst files.
I don't want just only some items or folders from the respective years
archived, but all items in all folders in, eg 1999, to end up in the 1999 pst
archive.

In what field does that "1999" or "1998" date appear? If in the "received
date", then Archive may or may not act upon it, since archiving uses the
"modified" date of an item when deciding whether or not to archive an item.

the method i've used in the past is to create sub-folders in the
ARCHIVE folder, one for each year, and then manually move the messages
from the master archive folder to the appropriate year folder.
