How to add smileys in an outlook e-mail

My colleage is using a PC with Win2k and when writing e-
mails has tried to do the usual smiley trick '' but it
simply comes out as colon bracket. It does not transform
into the funny face. I am sure there is not a setting, but
can this be enabled somehow?
