i've installed several new picture/symbol-type fonts that i'd like to use as
bullets, but i can't figure out how to have these new collections pop up with
my standard symbol collections like wingdings.

In the Bullets and Numbering dialog box, click the Bulleted tab.
Select a bullet style, and then click the Customize button. Click the
Bullet button. Select the desired font, and then pick the desired
bullet. Click OK twice.

actually the problem is that the newly installed fonts don't show up when i
get to the customized bullet section, even though i have access to these
fonts from the document formatting selection. i only have normal text,
wingdings 1-3, monotype sorts, and zapf dingbats in my symbol list though i
have several new "dinbats" fonts. (got them from dafont.com if that makes any
difference). the text ones i've been using just fine fine. i'm able to "type"
with the symbol fonts, but they don't show up on this list to select them as
bullets.

am i making sense?

Have you tried to click the Font button (in the Customize Bulleted
List dialog box), pick the desired font and then click the Bullet
button to select the desired character?
