How to Access Safe Mode On Windows XP?

Is there a Safe Mode on Windows XP? A friend of mine has Windows XP that
crashed while surfing a few days ago. The computer went into a reboot and
since that time, will not boot up. I've got a feeling that she got hit by a
virus that may have caused some damage. I'd like to know how to get into
safe mode so that to start with, I can access scan disk to try to fix any
errors. TIA and any advice is appreciated.
 
When the computer first starts booting continue tapping the F8 key. When the screen comes up you will have a selection to choose from. You will see safe mode listed.
