Hi,

My Win98SE system crashed. System directory damage is beyond repair.
I used Outlook Express for mails and Outlook for Contacts administration.
All tips to recover / export assume a working Windows which I don't have
anymore!

How can I recover / extract / export:
1. Emails
2. Filter rules
3. Blocked Sender List
4. Contacts.

I think I need to go through DOS to salvage data
or will it help to hook the disk to an other system?
I intend to import results into Office XP Outlook.

Any help is highly appreciated.

For the Outlook Express date check out
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/backup/ , for the Contact information in
Outlook then search the system for a file with a *.pst extension, this can
either be opened in the working version by using the File > Open > Personal
Folder File or by using the import/export command of the File Menu in
Outlook. Tip you would need to import the Outlook Express data in Outlook
Express first before importing/exporting to Outlook.

If you can hook it up as a second drive on a working system, I'd try Outlook
Express Freebie Back up and see it it helps.

Search the hard drive for *.dbx - those are the files with the messages.
You will need to copy those DBX files to an empty Windows folder on the hard
drive of a machine with a functioning Windows.
After copying them make sure they do not have the Read Only attribute.
Then you can use OE's File | Import to import the messages from that store
directory.

Please respond in Newsgroup. Do not send email
http://www.fjsmjs.com
Protect your PC
http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/

Download http://www.stellarinfo.com/phoenix.exe and install the same to a
machine having windows
then attach the crashed drive as slave and then analyse the same whether you
are able to see the dbx files are not

This procedure is required when you are not able to access the same using
DOS, this is a demo version
you would need to purchase the software for recovering the data.

Then once the tree is in front of you go to windows\application
data\identities\ and then to your email folder

DOes that mean you cannot see anything in that folder and subfolders ?

Any attempt to read c:\windows\system causes: Abort, Retry, Fail
Norton Disk Doctor found 16384 bytes in bad sectors
and 35 pages of lost clusters error lines. (oops !)
With Norton Disk Editor I could probably fix some directory entries
but 35 pages ..... :-(
