How do certain websites remember your computer eventhough you never created
an account with them or logged in. Is this via cookies? If so, how does
that work?
Any help would be appreciated.

Depends on the site.

Whenever you go to a web page - all sorts of information about you is
available via simple commands/through the browser. Cookies can also be
placed on your machine if you have this enabled and then later looked
for/read to retriee information you allowed the site to see tyhe last time
you were there.

What is it you are looking for?

Yes, it's by a cookie. A cookie is a small text file that a Web site can
save to your hard drive, write information to, and later re-open and read
when you go back to that site. Many cookies are harmless, but this can be a
significant privacy issue since tracking cookies (by advertisers) may be
accessed by multiple web sites with content from the same source and
accumulate browsing history.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP_cookie for more detail.
