Hello all,

Just purchased a seagate 120 gig HDD. If anyone is interested they had these at bestbuy for a $100 minus a $50 rebate.
About $55 when all is said and done. Anyway, I just want to use this drive as storage for music and photo's. How should I go about
setting it up on my computer, including the jumper settings and everything? My current setup is:

SCSI cd-rom/burner(old one but I love it!). It's plugged into a pci slot via a scsi card. Not sure what the jumper setting is at.

Primary ide/HDD is connected to ide1 slot on MB. I think the jumper is set to cable select.

So I was just wondering what the best way to set up the second drive was. Should I partition it(not sure how to do that even) or
just leave it whole? Oh yeah my main HDD is a maxtor 60gig. Thank you for any info...

as long as your software is installed on the same partition as the OS
(windows?), Then its cut and dry. Cable select has sometimes caused problems
for me. I use master / slave [or master with slave in the case of western
digital drives]. I would break that 120 into 2 / 3 partitions. Use the
Seagate utilities.

a drive has to be partitioned and formatted NTSF (XP) or fat32 Win 9x.
which is why possibly you thought it was dead in your other post.
An 80 conductor ribbon (ultra 133-ultra ata- called lots of things lately if
your trying to
get one at Frys/ bestbuy etc.), Should be used.

Not sure what you mean by this. I want to just use the second drive for
storage only, for music and photo's. Do I need to put windows on it?(I have
WinXP OS). So say I'm using iTunes software for example. Can't I put the
iTunes software on the new drive? or do I need to put the iTunes software
on my main drive(the one with winxp). If the latter is the case I take it
the software from the main drive then just accesses the music stored on the
slave drive.

What is the advantage of partitioning?

thanks,

well some people make 2 partitions 1 for the OS and another for all the
installs of software, instead of putting them on the same partition as the
OS. e.g. Os on c: and all other installations on d:. If you have done
this then when adding a HD the drive letter assignments will change and mess
up shortcuts and registry values.

No you dont have to put windows on it. I have been using a similiar set up.
You should partition the Hard drive although you dont have to. Windows will
just assign drive letters and you can see the partitions when you viw "My
Computer".
