How on earth do you change the monitor in XP?

I have just made a clean install of XP having used 98 for several years. I am prevented from installing my Vivid XSII Windows XP driver because when I do the refresh rate is too much for the DEFAULT monitor which promptly gives me a black screen on rebooting. I have the driver file for the CTX monitor and have done the usual stuff installing the .inf file. BUT.... unlike W98 there is no "Change" button in the DEFAULT monitor properties screen. Even the Properties button is greyed out! So how on earth do you substitute the CTX monitor for the stubborn default monitor? I am going round in circles even when I try to do this in safe mode.

Right click an empty area of the desktop and choose
Properties>Settings>Advanced>Monitor>Properties>Driver. There are several
options there for changing drivers.

Hi:

r-click on Desktop >Properties >Settings >Advanced >Monitor
Properties >Driver tab >Update Driver >choose Install from a list or
specific location (Advanced) >Next >choose Don't search. I will choose
the driver to install. >Next >uncheck Show compatible hardware >choose
mfr from left list and model # from right list. (the most recent date
should be the drivers you just installed) >Next >ignore unsigned
driver if warned >Apply >OK

Happy trails,
